Abstract:

Every day, 81 individuals complete suicide in the United States—about 29,000 persons a year. Every 18 minutes, someone in the United States dies by suicide (AFSP, 2003). For every two homicides, there are, on average, three suicides completed each year (USPHS, 1999).The myth is that only crazy people kill themselves. This is false. Most people who kill themselves are very rational, intelligent people. They have not lost touch with reality, but they feel hopeless and are in terrible pain. This article is a comprehensive examination of the causes, warning signs, and prevention strategies that everyone working with offenders must understand and know.
