Abstract:

The article by Debbie A. Mukamal, director of the Prisoner Reentry Institute at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice of the City University of New York, is based on her presentation at the ICCA Annual Research Conference in Atlantic City, New Jersey, 2005. In the article, she provides a brief overview of where reentry is relative to evidence-based practice, makes suggestions regarding a new approach for community corrections to consider in meeting the challenges of prisoner reentry, and describes the work of the Prisoner Reentry Institute. The second article in this issue is by Rob Carmona, president and CEO of STRIVE Inc. His organization is implementing a grant from the U.S. Department of Labor to provide 24 months of job training, placement, education, and career development services to 700 young offenders and people at risk of court involvement across the country. A network of 20 agencies is delivering the services developed by STRIVE, augmented by local innovations.Leonard A Sipes, Jr., of the Court Services and Offender Supervision Agency for the District of Columbia (CSOSA) has put together a resource guide regarding treatment, education, and job-related services for offenders on community supervision. The guide is a good example of what an agency can do to make both the offender and his or her family aware of what services exist to assist them in their reentry efforts. Local agencies may find that with a little effort, they can duplicate this type of resource, geared to their local needs and perspectives.
