Abstract:

Using a case study approach, the authors are able to put forward a cogent argument for the development of female programs based on evidence-based practices. There is a good discussion of the issues of risk assessment instruments as they relate to female offenders, an outline of theoretical approaches, staff selection and training, and program evaluation. The authors conclude their argument by noting that “successful gender-responsive programs recognize that female offenders’ treatment has to be supportive and nurturing, not confrontational.” They also acknowledge that gender-responsive programs benefit from the work done by the “what works” practitioners and researchers and that including principles and practices based on this research will greatly enhance efforts to provide effective programs for women offenders.
