Abstract:

Although much correctional rehabilitation focuses on changing individual attitudes and behaviors, a century of criminological research has taught us that such dynamics cannot be understood in isolation. In particular, desistance from crime is made enormously difficult without access to education and employment. The current article seeks to honor the contributions of Don Evans to rehabilitation research exploring the barriers to employment for criminalized individuals, unpacking the role of employment in desistance, and examining how an educational program that provides employment opportunities for criminalized people can provide a pathway, or “hook,” for desistance from crime.
