Abstract:
Black and brown people in the United States face discriminatory lending practices and substandard housing at higher rates than the majority population. This is partly perpetuated by mortgage companies that continue to discriminate while citing to profit-making reasons. This article looks at government actions that created segregated neighborhoods along racial lines and the lingering results. In order for real change to occur, potential buyers who have been wronged or advocates for fair housing must win a class action demanding policies that reverse centuries-long discriminatory practices, and the legislative branch must have the will to write and enact those policies. Keywords: Racial discrimination, fair housing, discriminatory lending, segregation, racial covenants
