Abstract:

Initially written in 2004, “The Future of Corrections: Peering Over the Horizon” examines corrections in the United States from a historical perspective and with a critical eye toward the future. Drawing from the insights of two correctional leaders of the 20th century—Richard A. McGee and George J. Beto—the author provides predictions of his own on what corrections might look like in the future and the dynamics that might influence change. In the intervening 17 years since this paper was written, there have been changes in the criminal justice system—some in line with the predictions, and others not. This instructive article reminds us of past successes and failures and encourages a thoughtful and realistic approach to crafting the future of corrections.
