Abstract:
Misdemeanors, long neglected, are now on the forefront of academic, policymaker, and practitioner attention. This issue’s “Worth Reading” reviews four contributions on the subject: “Misdemeanorland: Criminal Courts and Social Control in an Age of Broken Windows Policing” a book by Issa Kohler-Hausmann (Princeton University Press); “Punishment Without Crime: How Our Massive Misdemeanor System Traps the Innocent and Makes America More Unequal,” by Alexandra Natapoff (Basic Books); “Misdemeanor Machinery: The Hidden Heart of the American Justice System,” a symposium sponsored by the Boston University School of Law, proceedings published in “Boston University Law Review;” and “Misdemeanor Justice Project—A Focus on Criminal Justice System Responses to Lower Level Offenses,” edited by Preeti Chauthan and Jeremy Travis in the journal Criminal Justice Policy Review.Keywords: Misdemeanor Justice
