Abstract:
Over the past two decades, community corrections programs have played a vital role in reducing the prison population and the costs of incarceration in New Jersey. At the same time, they have contributed to a marked improvement in public safety as evidenced by significant reductions in offender recidivism rates and dramatically lower crime rates. This report chronicles the evolution of New Jersey’s community-based programs from their initial beginning as a response to prison overcrowding to a highly successful and cost-effective prisoner reentry and public safety strategy. Keywords: Community corrections in New Jersey, Reentry Coalition of New Jersey, reducing prison population, incarceration costs, recidivism in New Jersey
