Abstract:

Jean Vanier, founder of the L’Arche communities based on the special value of the intellectually and physically disabled, passed away at the age of 90 on May 7, 2019. Vanier founded the L’Arche communities in 1964, the same year that the International Halfway House Association (now the International Community Corrections Association) was formed. The L’Arche movement was created to provide a home, a family, and a community for intellectually and physically disabled members of our society who are having trouble finding a place in our communities. Like the L’Arche movement members, ICCA’s founders strove to find a home and place for those stigmatized by mental illness, substance abuse, and criminal records.
