Abstract:

Successful reentry programs promote public safety and family reunification by providing formerly incarcerated citizens with social support, constructive supervision, social inclusion, and community engagement activities that help them achieve productive restored citizenship. In order to site new reentry programs, however, service providers often have to first overcome entrenched community resistance based on widely-shared myths about public safety risks and drop in property values. This article touches on many of the obstacles and ordeals that one organization encountered as it attempted to site a new transitional facility in a city where it had been providing services for more than 50 years.
