Abstract:

This article, inspired the author’s encounters with Don Evans and his work, synthesizes evidence about the relationship between reducing reoffending and enabling social integration. It argues that community corrections (and the wider justice system) needs to attend to both of these goals and to the relationships between them. Doing that requires much more than a narrow focus on “correcting” or changing individuals subject to probation or parole, and it demands a reconceptualization not just of the relevant evidence base, but also of the way correctional services are evaluated.
