Abstract:

The complete issue includes all of the articles listed in the table of contents above, plus a brief commentary from the journal’s editor, Don Evans, “Searching for Justice in an Insecure World,” a reflection on four books, by Wole Soynika, Zygmunt Bauman, Jonathan Simon, and Richard V. Ericson, published in the early 2000s that all attempted to draw attention to the consequences of policies driven by fear, insecurity and uncertainty. The first article is an interview with ICJA President Lisa Lopez-Canseco in which she advises us of the goals for the coming two years of her leadership of the newly branded ICJA. The second article, by Dr. Kim Sperber, gives us a good sense of the complexities involved in working with justice-involved persons who are or should be connected to health services on a number of fronts, including addiction services, mental health programs, and finding ways to deal with ongoing opioid use disorders. The third article, by Dr. David Farabee, is a reprint of his article published nearly a decade ago in which he discusses the “fallacy of what works.” Evidence-based practice or policy is an evolving activity and we need to continue to build the evidence for our claims, especially by demanding more longitudinal studies to reinforce our often-claimed but not demonstrated positive outcomes. In his regular Worth Reading column, Russ Immarigeon reviews a number of recent books dealing with the role of the courts, including the authority vested in court rulings and the role of problem-solving approaches such as drug courts as well as opioid courts and other similar approaches.
