Abstract:
Almost by definition, families that establish foundations are committed to “giving back,” and a common way of doing this is to establish a scholarship program. One of the pleasures of working with family foundations is seeing the ways their scholarship programs can be tailored to reflect the family. Some families create scholarships for students at their shared alma mater. A family with a tradition in a particular profession might support students who plan to enter that field. Where family members share a hobby, interest, or extracurricular activity, they can make achievement or participation in that area one of the scholarship selection criteria. But while foundation scholarship programs are a recognized vehicle for a family’s philanthropy, they also should be considered as a method to promote the family’s value of philanthropy. Keywords: PLR 201302042; PLR 9645021; Bingler v.
