Abstract: 

A whistleblower policy like the sample provided in this article encourages staff and volunteers to come forward with credible information about misconduct; indicates that the organization will protect the whistleblower from retaliation; and identifies those staff, board members, or outside parties to whom such information can be reported. By helping to bring misconduct to light, a whistleblower policy can protect a family foundation from monetary loss and damage to its reputation and can give the foundation an opportunity to correct impropriety internally— before a government agency begins enforcement action. It also reminds family foundation managers of their fiduciary obligations and signals to government auditors that an organization maintains a culture of good governance.
