Abstract:

Running a foundation can be incredibly rewarding, but it also requires a good deal of knowledge and skill. Foundation trustees must build a healthy board, set direction, oversee investments and finances, make legal and ethical choices, find worthy grantees, operate effectively, plan for the future, ensure smooth leadership transitions, and more. Enter the country’s philanthropy support organizations that exist to serve foundation trustees and staff after a foundation’s incorporation or trust documents are filed. The Washington, DC-based Association of Small Foundations (ASF) is the country’s largest philanthropy support organization. Its members include some 2,800 foundations with more than 15,000 trustees nationwide. ASF is also one of the largest organizations serving the high-net-worth marketplace, with nearly half of ASF’s member foundations run by living donors.
