Abstract:

Charitable giving remains remarkably hardy despite recent economic uncertainties, rising from $199 billion in total giving in 1999 to $241 billion in 2002, according to the Giving USA 2002 annual survey. However, as with many aspects of American life, philanthropy has been deeply affected by the broader social, political, and economic environment in which we live. The uncertain outlook for the stock market, corporate scandals (in both for-profits and nonprofits), international tensions, and concern for security around the world and in our communities leads us to reconsider our philanthropy, both in real giving as well as the giving structures we utilize.
