Abstract: 

Site visits always sound like a great idea. After all, what could be more effective and create greater accountability than visiting grantseekers to ensure that representations made in the application are correct and to make a subjective determination of the charity’s capabilities? However, working site visits into the foundation’s grantmaking process and then using the information gathered is not so simple. The site visit signals to the reviewed charity that the foundation is serious in its analysis and will be watching to ensure that the funds are used for specified purposes.
