Abstract:

In our September-October 2008 issue (Vol. 7, No. 6, p. 1) we featured a checklist from the American Council on Education website. The purpose of that checklist was to help ยง501(c)(3) organizations conform various aspects of their governance to avoid legal and public relations problems. The original version of that checklist, originally prepared by the Washington law firm Arent Fox in June 2008, was subsequently updated and, with the permission of ACE, we are pleased to offer the here the updated version, with important additions on such important topics as compensation and expense reimbursements. As with the original, the emphasis here is on public charities, but the implications are broader than public charities alone.
