Abstract: 

As this issue goes to press, charities are busily engaged in their year-end fund-raising campaigns and the press is pursuing apocalyptic stories of the dire straits in which many charities find themselves. With unemployment high, the stock market still down from its levels in 2007 and 2008, and economic recovery seemingly delayed, it is no wonder that donors may feel pressed—so much so that they carefully rethink their charitable priorities and many cut back their normal giving.
