Abstract:
Millennials are ever more important participants in philanthropy—it is estimated that at least $6 trillion of ultra-high-net-worth individuals’ wealth will be passed to the next generation in the United States over the next three decades, and charitable giving will become a focus for this group. But millennials must be engaged, energized, and empowered on their own terms. The massive impending transfer of wealth requires charities and attorney advisors alike to understand a new, financially and technologically savvy generation whose members have high expectations for their investments. This article examines the charitable “personality” typical of many millennials and some of the unique and important ways in which a family foundation may be an ideal fit for the charitable aims and motivations for this generation. Keywords: Giving “personality;” charitable motivation among millenials; financial and emotional “return on investment”
