Abstract:
A program-related investment (PRI) is a loan or capital investment that a private foundation makes primarily to further its tax exempt purpose. This brief article explains how to use PRIs to operate and support educational programs, explaining how PRIs differ from grants, how to qualify as a PRI while avoiding excise taxes on income generated, and how recent IRS private letter rulings offer guidance for establishing PRIs that comply with current law.Keywords: Tax Benefits of Program-Related Investments
