Abstract:

Issues surrounding the ownership, authenticity, and provenance of art are important to collectors, their heirs, and because artwork is so often donated to them as part of a collector’s estate plan—family foundations. How does one know whether what the collector is buying, or owns, is real or fake? This article examines art forgery and other issues, provides examples of recent cases that highlight the increased risk involved in art investing, and explains due diligence authentication methods that can be used to ensure that a collector is buying or selling authenticated artwork.
