Abstract:

When a woman complains that she has been raped, college officials and police can and must take the allegations seriously and investigate the matter. The flip side of the coin, however, is that a rush to judgment can ruin the lives of the accused men, who may not have committed any crimes. Several years ago, the entire academic community watched as several members of the Duke University lacrosse team defended accusations of rape that turned out to be false. After dismissal of the charges, several members of the team brought suit against both Duke and the City of Durham. In this article, the editors of Campus Safety & Student Development examine the issues raised by the infamous case.
