Abstract:

A new scheme in the UK, social impact bonding, might prove to be a useful tool for the on-going monitoring of released sex offenders. While the results of the programs require further empirical testing, early measures of the SIB model have shown success at reducing recidivism in a two-site pilot program in the UK. With U.S. governments searching for ways to lower costs related to housing, treating, and/or monitoring various types of offenders, the SIB’s innovative funding formula offers some possible answers to the financial needs of long-term supervision programs, such as those now mandated for sex offenders.
