Abstract:

It is the common, if not universal, practice among sex offender treatment programs to have the patients discuss the offenses as they are found in the court findings and to admit to the truthfulness of these findings. These findings appear in either criminal convictions or civil commitments. Requiring the patient to acknowledge the findings as factual frequently leads to tension between the treatment providers and the patient. Both must eventually come to some form of agreement if the patient is to graduate from the program. In the case of indeterminate civil commitments for sex offending, this can cause the patient a great deal of difficulty if there are legitimate reasons to disagree with the way the court drafted the findings.
