Abstract:

It is such an accepted proposition that actuarial evaluations of sex offenders are more accurate than clinical evaluations that it would seem foolhardy to defend the clinical approach at all. I recently attended a workshop (“State-of- he-Art Assessment of Sexual Offenders Using Actuarial Tools,” William Mitchell College of Law, St. Paul, MN (Nov. 15, 2002)), at which Dr. Howard Barbaree (Dep’t of Psychiatry, Univ. of Toronto) stated clearly and emphatically that not only is the actuarial method superior, but even the use of any clinical methodology to qualify or refine a prediction lowers the predictive accuracy of the actuarial tools.
