Abstract:

Much research has been conducted in an attempt to explain the occurrence of sexual offending. While no single theory has been advocated as a comprehensive explanation for such behavior, a routine activities theory has been consistently supported by the literature as a useful framework. Because this theory has been empirically supported and has been shown to accurately account for a large number of sexual offenses, sex offender legislation has increasingly been based on the central tenets of routine activities theory.
