Sex Offender Law Report

next article > |return to table of contents

Abstract:

Child sexual abuse in the Catholic Church is an issue that has come to the forefront of public attention in the past two years. Though reportage of cases increased throughout the 1990s, it was only two years ago, after it was discovered that Father John Geoghan of Boston had allegedly molested more than 100 boys, that it emerged as a “crisis.” Various victims’ organizations and media outlets claimed that child sexual abuse was occurring in epidemic proportions, while the church claimed that although there were some priests who abused children, this was not an endemic problem. No one really knew how wide spread the problem actually was.
