Abstract:

Unless we understand that sin and redemption, not crime and punishment, constitute the warp and woof of Roman Catholic theology and thus the central concerns of its hierarchy, we may discern little connection between the two major news stories of the first half of 2004, involving the church in the U.S., or, worse, we may cynically interpret the one as constituting the “good offense” that represents the “best defense” against the other.
