Abstract:

Editor’s Note: After literally decades of feminist lobbying and demands for better treatment of rape victims, many police agencies across America are still stuck in a 1950s-era view of sexual assault. There often is little support for sex crimes investigators and such complaints frequently are not properly investigated because of the limited resources available to police departments and the weak training of their investigators. Some of these misperceptions can be explained by looking at the training often provided to law enforcement officers. The article below describes some of the training flaws and suggests important ways to change training so that reports of sex crimes are handled properly.
