Abstract: 

The New Jersey legislature passed the Sexually Violent Predator Act (SVPA), N.J. Stat. ยง 30:4-27.24, et. seq. in 1998. This new law established the procedures for the civil commitment, upon release from confinement, of those offenders convicted of a sexually violent offense who are found to have a mental abnormality or personality disorder that increased the likelihood of reoffense.
