Abstract:

Editor’s Note: This is the first in a series of articles by John Furlong that will follow the process of a civil rights case through the court system. Throughout several articles, Furlong will follow an actual case from filing to judgment in order to better help the readers understand the court process and how judges manage the cases. Furlong conceived of this series after watching the media blitz on Terri Schiavo in the four weeks before her death, realizing that there was very little information presented on the seven years of litigation that preceded the final order to remove her feeding tube. His hope is that this series of articles will help to shed light on the litigation process.
