Abstract:

The SANE program originated during the 1990s through funding from the OVC and continues to operate through funds from women’s groups and other entities. This program is a type of Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) that was initiated in response to the shortcomings experienced by sexual assault sufferers when they visited the hospital and felt revictimized due to untrained personnel. The SANE program has been described by its promoters as a link between the legal and medical professions in victim advocacy, since it aids in giving medical and psychological attention and collecting and providing legal evidence to law enforcement. Studies demonstrate that the existence of the SARTs led to an increase of 17% to 20% in sexual assault reporting, a tremendous accomplishment in view of the history of underreporting of sexual crimes.
