Sex Offender Law Report

Abstract:

R.I. Schools Mandated to Teach Dating Violence Ann Burke’s 23-year-old daughter, Lindsay, was killed by her boyfriend, Gerardo Martinez, after a tumultuous relationship during which he incessantly called her at night, isolated her from her family, and physically abused her repeatedly. Although she left her boyfriend several times, she did not change her phone number or have a plan for safely cutting off contact for good because she believed, perhaps naively, that she could be friends with her boyfriend if the romance ended. Lindsay may not have understood the dynamics of an abusive relationship, but her death has prompted an effort to ensure that other young people do. A new law, the Lindsay Ann Burke Act, requires all public middle and high schools in Rhode Island to teach students about dating violence in their health classes.
