Abstract: 

On April 21, 2009, the United States Supreme Court heard arguments in the case of Safford Unified School District #1 v. Redding, 129 S.Ct. 2633 (2009). The Court rendered its decision on June 25, 2009. In an 8-to-1 ruling, the decision was delivered by Justice David Souter, in which Chief Justice John Roberts joined, along with Justices Antonin Scalia, Anthony Kennedy, Stephen Breyer, and Samuel Alito. Justices John Paul Stevens and Ruth Bader Ginsburg joined in part with the judgment and also filed separate opinions concurring in part and dissenting in part. Justice Clarence Thomas filed a 22-page dissenting opinion and also concurred in the judgment in part. The following is a review of the decision.
