Abstract:

The development of the Internet and computer-mediated communications has fostered the growth of a wide range of communities supportive of deviant sexual behaviors. (See Andrew D. DiMarco and Heather DiMarco, “Investigating Cybersociety: A Consideration of the Ethical and Practical Issues Surrounding Online Research in Chat Rooms,” in Yvonne Jewkes, ed., Dot. cons: Crime, Deviance, and Identity on the Internet 164-79 (2003).) Individuals with sexual interests that may be viewed as inappropriate or illicit often push individuals into virtual spaces where they can operate in relative anonymity without fear of shame or stigma.
