Abstract:

Using the UK as a starting point, this article explores a question that transcends international borders: when to disclose that an individual is a suspect in a criminal investigation. In particular, this article examines the heightened tension among the competing interests of the accused individual and the public in cases involving sex crimes, when the risks for harm—to a vulnerable person who may become a victim (if the allegations turn out to be true) or to a wrongly accused individual (if the allegations turn out to be untrue)—are at their greatest.
