Abstract:

In previous issues of SLR, we introduced the basic outline of Jeffrey Epstein’s sex trafficking enterprise and an examination of Epstein’s “fit” with the criteria of sex offending against children. This article expands on the foundational case against Epstein which was assembled by the Palm Beach Police Department, actively undermined by federal prosecutors, and eventually set aside to allow Epstein to plead out and enjoy the least restrictive sentence of any Level III sex offender so far recorded. Among the issues covered here: Florida investigators expected more charges, harsher punishment for Epstein based on their findings; police and prosecutors were at odds during investigations; revelations about Epstein’s plea deal led to resignation of the attorney in charge, Alexander Acosta, from a cabinet position in the Trump administration; and during his stay in a Miami jail, Epstein was known to have engaged in sex with young women despite being in custody.
