Abstract:

This article summarizes risk assessment guidelines presents excerpts from an array of state policies and laws. The provisions selected are geared toward probation and parole decisions, because a release from prison is the first opportunity to employ meaningful decisions about the threat to public safety presented by a given offender. The California Review Committee for sex offender policies, for example, emphasizes the need for the use of assessments to “inform decisions concerning conditional release, and allow community supervision officers to tailor conditions to a person’s specific strengths, skill deficits, and reintegration challenges.”
