Abstract: 

Because plea bargaining is so important and pervasive in the U.S. criminal courts, it is as crucial to fairness that defendants are effectively represented by legal counsel during plea negotiations as in trial court. This article reviews the most important court decisions establishing and deepening the Sixth Amendment right to effective assistance of counsel.
