Abstract:

The Department of Justice (DOJ) released a report in September 2014 summarizing the federal laws that govern sex offenders. The report, “Sex Offender Registration and Notification in the United States: Current Case Law and Issues,” provides a useful overview of the various Acts that have set standards for sex offender registration, focusing on the current law, passed in 2006, Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act (SORNA). This article summarizes and excerpts sections of the report that outline the federal standards under SORNA, the consolidation of information under the national public registry, and other related information.
