Abstract:
While it is difficult to determine the exact relationship between sexual offending and substance use, since most sex offenders tend to possess a wide variety of risk factors that can influence their offending behavior, alcohol and drug use may interact with other risk factors in a manner that increases their risk of engaging in sex crimes. This article surveys some of the key relationships between alcohol and drug abuse and sex offending, with a focus on the interplay between alcohol and drug use and other risk factors associated with sex offending, and the likelihood that sex offenders who abuse substances have a greater risk of recidivism when compared to sex offenders who do not use alcohol or drugs. Keywords: Substance Use Risk Factors; Prevalence of Alcohol and Drug Use Among Sex Offenders; Treatment Suggestions and Implications
