Abstract:
Taking away people’s freedoms is always serious. Involuntary civil commitment of a sexual offender, or anyone else, represents such a process. We owe it to everyone involved in such procedures, and to society in general, to ensure that only the most accurate information is used for this purpose. It is with that view that I write about some potentially important but inaccurate information that has been disseminated. The context is the civil commitment of sexual offenders and the argument made by some people (typically arguing against such commitments) that a certain diagnosis—paraphilia not otherwise specified (NOS), referring to the subtype involving a paraphilic arousal towards raping—does not exist.Keywords:
