Abstract:

Our regular survey of the research literature summarizes and reviews three important studies: one illustrating how the Static-99R, which was designed to predict recidivism among men convicted of sexual offenses, is frequently used with convicted female offenders even though the tool has not been validated in the female population; research indicating the role that boys can have in promoting nonviolent norms and gender-equitable attitudes among their peer groups, which has become more widely recognized as a critical strategy for reducing violence against women and girls; and findings as to what extent instructions and expert testimony influenced jurors’ sensitivity to psychologically coercive interrogation tactics and guilt determinations. Reviewed are “The Static-99R Is Not Valid for Women: Predictive Validity in 739 Females Who Have Sexually Offended” Ethan Marshall, Holly Miller, Franca Cortoni, and Maaike Helmus, published in 33(6) Sexual Abuse 631-53 (2021); “Cases of Sexual Assault Prevented in an Athletic Coach-Delivered Gender Violence Prevention Program” by Kelley Jones, Daniel Tancredi, Kaleab Abebe, Taylor Paglisotti, and Elizabeth Miller, published in 22(4) Prevention Science 504-508 (2021); and “Sensitivity to Psychologically Coercive Interrogations: A Comparison of Instructions and Expert Testimony to Improve Juror Decision-Making” by Angela Jones, Ashley Blinkhorn, and Alexis Hawley, published in 21(4) Journal of Forensic Psychology Research and Practice 373-94 (2021).
