Abstract:

For many families caught in the web of domestic violence, a priest, pastor, or rabbi may be the first—or only— counselor they see. In times past, the response from these counselors was often abysmal, and it jeopardized the lives of women and children. That, fortunately, is changing. Faith communities are often important sources of strength and counsel for families. Given their importance, what should their response to domestic violence be? And what are they doing about it now? This article chronicles the actions of Catholic, Protestant, Jewish, Muslim, and Native American faith communities on partner violence, and provides numerous Web sites so readers can find more information about a particular group or denomination.
