Abstract:

Speaking as a member of a California-based advocacy group for the best interests of senior citizens, Shirley Krohn cries out against the injustices faced by elders who are often denied legal remedies after being bilked of their savings by family members, financial advisors, or other perpetrators. She details cases where even obvious exploitation and blatantly criminal acts were neither investigated nor prosecuted, despite the victims’ numerous appeals to police, courts, and other authorities responsible for handling these matters. Given the prevalence of elder financial abuse, such blatant disregard for the rights of the elderly places a large swath of our aging population at risk of losing everything they have, and at the very time of life when they need it the most.
