Abstract:

Dr. Kaufman is in an ideal position to offer observations and advice to clinicians working with batterers. He learned the finer points of what to do, and what not to do, when batterers present for treatment from his work in an agency devoted to that purpose. His arguments, including that batterers should not be seen for individual psychotherapy while in the earlier stages of a batterer intervention program, might seem counter-intuitive to those less familiar with the subtle manipulations typical of batterers in treatment. His recommendations, if followed, could yield better outcomes for men who are sincerely trying to change and for those trying to help them.
