Abstract:

Kathy McGibbon Givens describes the powerful healing impacts of using creative writing as a means of processing and resolving traumatic memories. Having been sex-trafficked as a young woman, the author reveals that, as her disturbing recollections began to surface, she found relief through writing about her experiences in the third person as opposed to the first—as though the trauma had happened to someone else. She relates here the ways in which this approach aided her in letting go of that painful episode in her life.
