Abstract:
This article arises out of a survey of protective mothers attending the Thirteenth Battered Mothers Custody Conference in Albany, New York in 2018. Conducted by two Siena College students—one of them the first author, who worked under the tutelage of the second author and Chair of the conference—this study aimed to replicate the findings of earlier research on the experiences of battered women who petition the family court system for safety and custody of their children. Although the sample size was relatively small, these results provide additional credence to the reports made by battered women from all over the country about the mistreatment and denials of safety and justice they receive at the hands of family court judges and their agents. Keywords: Family Court; Best Interests of the Child Standard; Custody Litigation and Domestic Violence
