Abstract:

In this article, author Skye Saunders explains the unique and intricate challenges encountered by Australian women who work in rural areas, typically in a workplace peopled almost entirely by males. The circumstances faced by female workers in the outback are relatively extreme; such women are isolated, working far away from population centers under the eyes of males who hold a macho mentality and consider sexual harassment a sport. It is no surprise, then, that such female workers experience high levels of sexual harassment and other gender based victimization.
